MechWarrior 5 Beginner's Manual: Highlander HGN-733 Mech Build
[Document 1]
Welcome MechWarrior to Ronin Fox Armored Security's Beginner Training Manuals for the Highlander HGN-733.
Weight Class: Assault
Role: Juggernaut
Threat Level: Moderate
Availability: Rare
This old design dates back to the Star League where it served with distinction. It was intended to be an Urban combat Mech.
The 733 model of the Highlander is a downgrade of the original Star League 732. The more primitive technology allowed it to survive the collapse of the Star League; however, its factories would also be destroyed nearly driving the Mech to extinction.
Overall, the Highlander is a tough, all around Mech though its wide variety of weapons can be difficult to use.

Unfortunately it seems like the devs have not watched your videos :(
They have. They just think their ideas are better. Time has proven them wrong.
Dr. Banzai was smoking Bonsai when he put this one on the drawing board.
They make this Mech seem like it was some kind of stroke of genius too.
I think this is the best way to build the 733 until lostech becomes available when it becomes unlocked. It definitely has underwhelmed a little compared to my expectations. Edit. Except the Vest. Its insane.
Yeah, this did better than I was expecting especially because normally I'd be able to equip higher quality versions of the weapons I used, and my allies wouldn't be in stock configs.
Oops all Dakka. Dem Ork Boyz would love this.
Has plenty of ammo to keep it going for a solid amount of time too.
I think I might be mentally unwell, because I am rewatching all your videos on this subject and working on an overhaul for SOD2. I don't think I can fix it all, but I am gonna try lol
I’m glad some other people have these odd build too My friend is very against downgrading weapons but it all depends on the mission The only stats that tell the truth are armor and speed and cooldown Damage is a lie it’s all based on the pilot Me personally I like being able to have constant output I’d probably use an lbx cannon tho
To me, it's an upgrade since you save 6 tons going from AC20 to AC5. The AC5 is also more heat efficient so fewer heatsinks are needed. You can do a lot with an extra 6+ tons.
Hahaha “sudoku”
So the PPC-X has done what centuries of Mechwarriors couldn't do. I have but one phrase for that Mech... "I'd buy that for a $"
That's why the BattleROM is important. Have to prove the models combat.
... beautiful. Love the Highlander!
I was pretty happy with how this came out.
Is there a way to predict or calculate what the skills will be able to evolve into?
There is, but it would require you to either memorize the traits because the traits tell you which skills they can upgrade into. For example, someone who "loved dancing" will definitely get "acrobatics" as a cardio option.
Awsome job with these emersive briefings!
Honored you enjoy them!
Ty!
Thank you for watching!
btw. what s you favourite assault mech? and what assault mech would you choose if you need something a bit faster?
Hmm, well, to start, I prefer fast Mechs in general, so I don't really care for Assault Mechs. I like light Mechs, medium Mechs and the faster heavy Mechs like the Dragon or the Champion. When I do play Assault Mechs, I like the Mauler in general. Amongst the faster assault Mechs, I like the Hatamoto-Chi if you have Solaris for PPC-Xs. I like the Highlander VEST. I like the Cyclops 11P and 10P. I like the Banshee 2P. Those are some I like off the top of my head. They also however play to my particular playstyle though.
@@GitGudFox yeah. the dragon is great! the only thing i do not like about it is that it has so many different types of weapons, but even that is not purely a disadvantage, because you can chance it around to make it fit anyone’s playstyle. Hmm, PPC-X, you said. great idea. i think i wanna try out the hatsmoto-chi next.
best mechwarrior 5 tutorials on yt 🤗 great style, great amount of information about the lore and the technicalities of the mechs. only downside: i want more😂
I'm glad you like it. I have tried to make them faster. I used to be on a 7 day schedule, but I couldn't maintain it. I gave it about 3 months to see if I could make a 7 day schedule work, but it was simply too aggressive of a schedule.
@@GitGudFox yeah. one can see the work you put in it. 🤗
Thank you!
I’m a new player in 2024 and your carrying my play through with all these tips hope to see new content when state of decay 3 drops 🎉
We need the HGN-733PP video where you shamble into battle at 48km yelling "SCOTLAND FOREVER!" with the assault claymore.
I'd probably have an easier time with the VEST there.
Yes! 😆
I god damned love these
I'm honored you enjoy them!
I found a dope ass golden desert eagle as I was watching this hell yeah 👍 🦅 🇺🇸
Threat lvl 3..........*Bagpipes intensifies* That sounds like a Challenge laddy!
That would not go well for the Highlanders either. The 733 is severely outgunned at long range which is probably where it's going to be fighting since it's extremely slow.
Given you went full LRM spam with both missile slots, I would've figured you'd also go for a heavy rifle and make it a total longe range fire support mech. Otherwise, yeah the AC5 is probably the best overall ballistic weapon in the game. A shame, as it lacks the jaw dropping oomf of an AC20 deleting mechs in a well placed shot.
Well, every video has a variety of test models. 733-1X AC5 model, the one that won the test. 733-2X AC5-RF model, didn't quite perform as well. Ran out of ammo. 733-3X Heavy Rifle model, overheated frequently, wasn't worth the concentrated damage 733-4X Heavy Rifle BF model, also overheated frequently and resulted in lower overall damage.
@@GitGudFox Fair enough, I'd probably try a similar build with lostech, as by the time you can start fielding Assaults the player would have some double heatsinks to play with by that point as well. Same for subbing the MLas for chem MLas instead. Anything to ease the heat burden but keep the burst damage.
That depends. You could definitely just skip right into Assault Mechs out of light Mechs by just saving up some c-bills and moving into a bigger industrial hub. By time you get to Kestrel Lancers, you could field multiple assault lances while simultaneously not having enough double heatsinks at the same time especially if you don't know how to bum off some double heatsinks from other sources like hero Mechs. Also, if you're familiar enough with the game where you know how to nickel and dime double heatinks for Mechs early, then you're probably familiar enough with the game where you can just do whatever you want with any build you want and would have no use for build guides either. This is a Beginner's guide after all.
I certainly don’t go out of my way to acquire a 733 but if I come across a 732 I will usually pick it up
Yeah, this guide is mainly for people who happen have a 733, so they're just a Highlander enthusiast and want to use a common model; however, it also teaches the fundamentals of the game as well since this model uses T1 equipment, no lostech, no upgrades etc.
One more Mech down until the King Crab video... hopium
The most likely Mechs I'll do are the ones that I cover in the streams since the chat votes for which Mechs I use, and so I get A LOT of time to test builds for them, so it's very likely the next guide will be the Raven since it was a voted Light Mech unless another Mech hits me out of nowhere I really want to do.
#Uglygang is here! Absolutely love the Highlander
There can only be one!
Great beginner manual commander fox, I look forward to seeing your catapult beginner manual when you do it.
Not sure what I'll do with the Catapult yet. I haven't used it much in stream since the chat hasn't voted for it. That's usually where I get a lot of ideas.
Another fantastic beginner manual Commander Fox. It's a shame that we can't perform a Highlander Burial in this game. By the time I get one I just remove the jump jets for ammo for the auto-cannon or switch it to a gauss rifle. Quick question, when would you want jump jets on a assault mech? On light mechs it'd make sense to make yourself erratic and unpredictable as possible but on assault mechs, they don't do much for me.
True, but it also means it doesn't work on us either, and since I never use jump jets, I never have to worry about that random Mech falling on top of me.
I love these videos, the battlerom footage is always so entertaining. Your commentary sounds especially energetic on this one in particular and it's awesome. You should do the Flea next, I haven't seen a light mech in a while.
Well, it's not how I normally talk. I have to literally go out of my way to sound monotonous because it's not how I normally talk, so it's possible that I just naturally slip back into my "storytelling" style of commentary.
@@GitGudFox Either way, I'm a fan of it. You sound like you were really getting into it with the battle footage and I'm all for it.
I see we have another Flea fan 15 or 17? I really like the flea and 17 is my preferred model.
@@SupremeBioShock I like all of them. I can't remember the name but whichever one has two ballistic slots is my favorite. Twin light rifles are too much fun.

This game has changed a lot
Not saying it's a bad build, Just saying... the HBK-4G is explicitly an AC20 platform, so removing the AC20 kinda just is like... why not just get an AC5 Centurion at that point? Lol.
For me? All the matters is what is effective. The intent of the model is totally irrelevant to me. In each build, I strive to make it as effective as possible from the lens of the beginner player. Does that mean my Centurion would look similar? Sure, but my Atlas will look similar to my Highlander which will look similar to my Zeus which will look similar to my Orion. All of them will use an AC5... some LRMs and medium lasers because it works and isn't hard to use. I will trend to whatever are the most effective weapons especially from the perspective of a new player.
If you want more nuanced reasons to use a Hunchback in this manner over a Centurion, here are a few. 1) You may dislike the look of the Centurion. 2) You may prefer a torso mounted AC instead of an arm mounted AC. 3) You found a Hunchback sooner than a Centurion and wanted a brawler. 4) The Centurion's melee capabilities are much weaker than the Hunchback's since the centurion has 1 lower arm. Those are just a few reasons just off the top of my head why you might prefer a Hunchback over a Centurion. Even the 4H creates a different feeling Mech as you don't have the tonnage for as much melee due to the headsinks requirements.
@@GitGudFox Ahh, I see. Fair enough! I guess I was looking at it more from an in-universe perspective, not so much from a game Mechanics and ease of use perspective. Cheers!
@@Real_Iron_Smith My channel is mainly about teaching people the fundamentals of the game so they don't have a lost, bad experience and give up. I splash in some lore in digestible amounts to try and help new players catch up without overloading them with factoids. So the channel is more about "git gud" more so than lore but I add the lore as a supplemental vitamin so to speak.
@@GitGudFox fair!
We need updated videos.
Watch UltraCash. That's still up to date.
I’m here in 2024😤🔥
idk what's worse a triple blood plague Pharrell pack or your commentary
My vision is you should be able to customize the extensions of your car and have them give extra stats, for example you can have something like the giant plow on the front of the impaler that will do extremely damage to zombies, or you can put on sort of a cage to give your car extra hits to the engine, something like that would be amazing for customization and making different cars for different scenarios
This became one of my favorite Heavy mechs ever since I watched this video. As soon as I get some double heat sinks, I'm getting more ammo for this speed demon's chem lasers.
If you get double heatsinks, it could be worth trying out pulse lasers if it doesn't overheat when using lostech.
do video on victor next
Highlander is up next. I'll get to the Victor in time though.
how did u get the tough negotiations
The main UltraCash video explains it best. The shorthand explanation is that you need specific character traits which influence your hero bonus. Tough Negotiations is a hero bonus you want. If you get a character with tough negotiation, you send them to your character bank.
Something I usually do, since I like to role play in universe, is keep the ammo in the torsos with their weapons and put the heat sinks in the legs. Not only is this because legs in universe don't really have a way to move ammo into the torso weapons, but also because leg heat sinks allow you to cool down stupid fast if you stand in water.
Will a normal PPC work, or no? :/
Effectiveness would be drastically reduced. A normal PPC is fantastically less effective than a PPC-X to the point that you would use a large laser instead most likely.
Can you maybe do a video on ranking what each map outpost bonus and how good they are compared to each other like drunker county’s hospital to providence ridge church you don’t have to
The infestations should be a setting that you have to turn on for a harder challenge
Wild look
These videos are helpful on giving me ideas on mech loadouts in MW5. I'm looking forward when you one day get to the Catapult or Flea.
Yeah, I'll eventually have 1 video for each Mech, but I can only make a few of these videos per month as they do require a solid effort since I am a 1-man RUclipsr.
@@GitGudFox Well keep up the good work then. ^-^
Ive been having issues with this mission. Colonel Sortek fails to spawn in. He's saying his lines.....but he does not spawn in meaning I could level the entire map and I can not complete this mission.
I haven't had that specific issue, but I'm also not surprised. The Kestrel Lancers seems to have a lot of bugs.
That loadout isn't very efficient and beginners will run out of ammo on those AC/2, the PPC is the right idea tho. Max armor, a PPC all the medium lasers you can mount and the rest in heatsinks will work well enough and keep you ice cold. If you feel comfortable you can gradually remove heatsinks and add more weapon. Just watch the trigger-finger. T-bolts run very hot and that could speak doom if you shutdown right smack in a melee.
Nah, that limits the Thunderbolt to exclusively short ranged combat meaning newer players get pounded by Scorpion tanks and LRM Mechs. AC2s don't jam like LRMs making it the ideal general purpose weapon with the PPC-X giving it the knockout punch it needs. 6 different Thunderbolt builds were tested before I settled on this one including laser heavy builds.
@@GitGudFox Wait...lrms jam? Is that a new dlc/ update thing?
@@commanderz9848 InnerSphere LRMs require a vertical launch style meaning they can't be fired if the enemy is too close. It jams the targeting system. That shouldn't happen in Clans though. Clans can fire their LRMs straight forwards.
@@GitGudFox Ah the minimum range. Now it checks out, i thought they jammed like an UAC.
i got two now. love em. what do you need high dpm for, if you oneshot a mech every few seconds 🤗😂
Well that means you're basically using 2 weapons in the game which is a great way to burnout of the game. I would burn out of the game in the same playthrough I was in if I was using headhunting tactics the entire time.
@@GitGudFox What you say is true. However, the problem is that the game kinda pushes you to that. Elite bullshit, bad AI, several enemy lances in the same engagement, endless vehicles, dropping lances on top of you... I mean, you guys obviously know how to play this game and yet the amount of damage you take for not power-playing is brutal.
That's why I try to demonstrate how to not get boxed into the meta. It lets people play the meta if they feel like it but also play their way. I think most builds are viable as long as they follow certain logical guidelines.
@@GitGudFox i would like a less arcady mechwarrior. more oneshots, less enemies, lower health, more long distance… and as i said, i like big ballistics with fast moving projectiles. the feel if taking apart enemies limb by limb is just so satisfying…🍆 wonder how mechwarrior 6 turns out.
They'd have to probably rework the armor system since it's lifted from the tabletop. The armor system is just... hit points. It doesn't take things into consideration like armor hardness, penetration, penetration angle etc. For a less arcade MechWarrior, they'd have to consider the Mechs more like realistic vehicles with realistic armor. I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to that either though it would be practically a different game altogether.
Ong, thought the Nightstar would be the last Mech we'd find. Probably our most successful stream for sometime. Those missions were horrible and we found a good number of rare mechs too! Edit: @42:27 that very unsure delay before false bravado at the thought of fighting the Wolfs Dragoons in a beachhead
We got really fortunate which I think we were due for.
Is the crusader any good and if so which model is the best ?, I've never really used it
The standard Crusader was solid. If I remember right, it didn't have a really outstanding lostech enhanced model.
I've been using lights and mediums during raid missions but they have to be super fast to get out alive ,lots of hit and run , I quite enjoy the hero variants of the wolfhound, cicada and assassin
The reliable barn door. If a mech can fit an AC20 effectively, I will shove one in it. Did it in MWO and MW5.
I'd use it more if it did more damage but the AC20 only outshoots the AC5 by a small margin.
@@GitGudFox Understandable. The biggest advantage of the AC20 is that it's so front loaded. This allows for less time facing the enemy and more time torso twisting. You also don't need to maintain constant aim to dump damage on a single component. I do like the AC5 though. It's my ballistic of choice when an AC20 isn't a good idea.
